Volume Explained

Academy->Volume Explained

Every option contract has a Volume value. Volume shows how many option contracts have traded today. A higher volume usually means more traders are actively buying and selling that option.

Volume measures trading activity.
For example:
  • Volume: 10 means 10 option contracts have traded today.
  • Volume: 1,250 means 1,250 contracts have traded today.
High volume often indicates greater interest in that option contract.

Higher volume can make it easier to buy or sell an option because there are more active traders in the market. Lower volume may mean fewer buyers and sellers, which can sometimes result in wider bid-ask spreads. Volume is just one piece of information and should be considered alongside other factors such as Open Interest, premium, and market conditions.

Volume vs Open Interest

Although they are related, Volume and Open Interest measure different things. Volume is the number of contracts traded today. Open Interest is the number of contracts that are currently open. A contract traded today increases volume, but it doesn't always increase open interest.

OptionLogic in Practice
OptionLogic displays the daily trading volume for every option contract directly in the option chain. Combined with Open Interest, ROI, premium, and market structure, volume helps provide additional context when comparing opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is higher volume always better?
Not necessarily. Higher volume usually means more trading activity, but it doesn't automatically make an option a better trade.

Does volume reset every day?
Yes. Volume starts at zero at the beginning of each trading day and increases as contracts are traded.

Is volume the same as Open Interest?
No. Volume counts today's trades. Open Interest counts the number of contracts that remain open.

Why do some options have very low volume?
Some option contracts attract less trading activity because they are farther from the current stock price or have less investor interest.

How does OptionLogic use volume?
OptionLogic displays volume alongside other important information so you can evaluate an option contract using multiple factors instead of relying on a single number.
